Mists of Pandaria: First Impressions

Hello everyone! As promised, a small review before I go to bed (school tomorrow). I have played to lvl 14 so far and I am greatly enjoying it and from what I can see on the chat channels, so is everyone else.

*Spoiler Alert*    Let me just start out by saying that the scenery is breathtaking and the art style and colors are beautiful to say the least. The music really pulls you in and you feel one with the world. Blizzard has as usual outdone themselves and the results really show. The story starts out with you training to be a successful monk. Fighting is very fun with many new moves like high swipe kicks and fast punches that daze enemies and deal damage to whom ever is near you. I’ve seen a lot of crazy new enemies so far like giant rabbits, crazy monkeys that like to jump on our head and smack you around and small magical tree folk. After much questing and enlightenment you and your friends are asked to speak to one of the elders.

Your sent on a hot air balloon up into the clouds and away from land. As you fly away you then realize that you were on a giant turtle. The whole island is actually the back of a moving gigantic turtle. After speaking to him, he tells you he is weak and dying and asks that you remove a big splinter he has stuck in his back. As you swing around you see that the splinter is actually  a huge Alliance airship that has crashed into the turtle’s side. It turns out the ship also had Horde prisoners on board as well.

After doing a few quests for each faction, your Panda friend Ji uses a Horde bomb to try and free the ship from the turtle’s side. The ship explodes and the turtle starts to lose alot of blood. Healers from both factions try frantically to stop the bleeding. At the same time they are attacked by creatures that have come up from the sea.

After the final battle, you go before your master and he asks you who you will be returning with, the Alliance or the Horde. This happens at about level 11-12.

I recommend the game to any WOW fan and any who might feel betrayed by blizzard. Give it a go, I’m sure you will enjoy it.

Mists of Pandaria Professions: Cooking

Are you one of those WOW players who love to explore Azeroth in search of unique recipes? Maybe you want to collect them all? Each recipe provides something unique to your player or group by raising certain stats etc.. or maybe you just want to get plain ol’ drunk, which is way fun also. Whatever the reason, cooking is popular, not only at home but online as well. Below is some great information provided by Blizzard about the cooking profession for our favorite fury friends..The Pandarens

Cooking: The Way of the Wok

by Nethaera Sep 24, 2012

The pandaren take their culinary creations seriously and their influence has changed cooking as a whole for all of Azeroth. Some of these changes are subtle, like the appearance of the cooking pane. Cooking recipes are more clearly organized based on what you’re looking to create, from expansion-specific recipes to holiday treats.

Cooking has become a slightly more individual affair. Feasts will still provide close-to-maximum food bonuses and are the most efficient way to provide for your raid, but the very best stat boosts are reserved for the cooks (and their customers) who put in that extra effort to create single-serving masterpieces. These food items crafted for individual consumption will provide primary stat benefits, and the more effort that goes into a particular recipe, the higher the value of the bonus stat it provides.

You’ll meet the Ironpaws in the Halfhill market in the Valley of the Four Winds on your epicurean quest. These are the culinary giants of Pandaria and as you complete quests for them, you’ll earn Ironpaw Tokens, which can be redeemed for Cooking rewards.

This new faction represents the best chefs that Pandaria has to offer, and you’ll be able to train with them to learn several different cooking specializations:

You’ll be able to specialize in any of these different Cooking techniques and any one will get you to max-level Cooking, but you’ll be able to master all of the ways if you so choose. While you can do all of them at once, the most efficient path to maximizing your culinary skills will be to focus on one Way at time. Of course, no great chef is worth a salt without some support in the kitchen. You’ll be able to summon an apprentice chef named Nomi who’s looking to learn the tricks of the trade from an accomplished pro. You’ll be able to teach her every day until she becomes an expert cook.

Cooking rewards (Ironpaw Tokens) will allow you to purchase a variety of items. These are earned by doing Cooking dailies, or by supporting the Ironpaw’s cooking school with the groceries that they need to teach their students. Here are some of the great new items available for purchase in the market:

  • Heirloom Frying PanRolling Pin, and Apron
  • Pandaren Banquets  – These provide the best possible stats of all the banquets.
  • Cooking School Bell  – Needed to summon Nomi
  • Flippable Table – Unleash your rage
  • Various exclusive ingredients that can’t be found anywhere else which are needed to craft banquets and the very best food items
  • Small bags of other commonly used Cooking ingredients*

Have too much of any one ingredient? By taking advantage of the common-ingredient bags available in the market, you’ll essentially be able to turn in stacks of surplus supplies for a small amount of something you’re having trouble getting. While it does add a convenient way to buy Cooking ingredients from a vendor, this won’t be the most economical use of your resources. If you’re concerned about being able to harvest ingredients, we suggest you get to know the Tillers, who can also help you establish your own farm and grow your own vegetables.

Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg (lettuce), and there’s more for you to discover when you begin your journey into Pandaria.

Jaina Proudmoore: Tides of War book review

Review of Jaina Proudmoore: Tides of War by Christie Golden

by Anne Stickney  Aug 14th 2012 at 5:00PM

Here’s a great review I found online that I wanted to share with my WOW fans.

WoW Insider reviews Christie Golden's novel, Tides of War
Oh, Jaina. How far you’ve come.Blizzard continues its trend of books that tie into World of Warcraft with its latest novel, Jaina Proudmoore: Tides of War. This book takes place after the events in Cataclysm and after the last cinematic of the Dragon Soul raid. Deathwing is well and truly dead, and the world is a better place for it — but for how long? Given the explosive nature of the Alliance/Horde conflict in Cataclysm, it’s readily apparent that we’re not about to go striding into the sunset, holding hands and singing songs of peace and harmony.

Tides of War revolves around Jaina Proudmoore and the events at Theramore Isle, which we’ll see in game when patch 5.0.4 hits live servers. Jaina’s been noticeably absent duringCataclysm; while we see Theramore forces out and about in the world, Jaina herself remains firmly ensconced in her tower abode on Theramore Isle. But there’s a change on the winds, one that’s been hinted at ever since the novel The Shattering was released. In The Shattering, Jaina was told that eventually, some day, she was going to have to choose a side. In Tides of War, she makes that choice in a spectacularly dramatic fashion.

But there’s far more to this novel than just Jaina Proudmoore.

Christie Golden knows her Warcraft and knows it well. With a host of beloved Warcraft novels under her belt, she continues to shine with her latest foray into the world of Azeroth. Golden is also no stranger to Jaina Proudmoore; her novel Arthas: Rise of the Lich King fleshed out more of Jaina’s tumultuous past as well as the birth and death of her relationship with Arthas, even as Golden explored the details of Arthas’ fall. That said, the character of Jaina has never been written better — Golden has an amazing grasp on the woman and what exactly is going on inside her head.

For those wondering, given Golden’s previous novels The Shattering and Thrall: Twilight of the Aspects, if we’re going to see an overabundance of a certain green-skinned orc, you needn’t worry at all. While Thrall does make a couple of appearances in the novel, he is far from the main character or even what I’d call a supporting role. However, because of Jaina and Thrall’s peculiar friendship that has spanned the years since the Third War, his appearances are definitely needed and warranted for the purpose of the story being told here.

As for the rest of the world, first and foremost is the question of the Dragon Aspects. In the closing cinematic for Dragon Soul, we saw the Aspects lose their powers and give way to the Age of Mortals — but just what the heck does that mean? What is an Aspect, if they no longer have their powers? For that matter, what is the purpose of a dragonflight, when their purpose has been fulfilled?

All of these questions and more are answered over the course of the novel. And while we may not get a definitive answer as to just what powers have been lost, we do have a better idea of the eventual fate of the dragonflights by the novel’s end.

The Horde sees its own fare share of development over the course of this novel, and the picture is not a pretty one. Baine Bloodhoof, who previously appeared in The Shattering, takes a prominent role in Tides of War as well as Vol’jin. Both leaders are decidedly unhappy with the direction Garrosh has been taking as of late concerning his push against the Alliance. Over the course of the book, their wariness for Hellscream’s antics is both highlighted and illustrated as frighteningly warranted.

But the tauren and trolls are not the only Horde races unhappy with Garrosh’s reign. Shown too are appearances by the Forsaken and the blood elves. Lor’themar Theron takes only a token appearance in the novel, but his appearance is a noteworthy one that has me hoping we see more of him in the future. Sylvanas is equally absent; however, her presence is absolutely felt over the course of events.

Lest you think this is a Horde-centric novel, I should point out that it definitely is not. There is equal time spent between Alliance and Horde as both sides ramp up to the devastating climax of the book itself. And major players on both sides are highlighted throughout the course of the novel, deftly written with development in mind. I was surprised to see the direction that Varian’s character is taking post-Wolfheart, but it’s a good direction for the character to take. Anduin also makes an appearance in Tides of War, and it’s apparent that he is, above all else, not deserving of the goody two shoes label he’s been slapped with.

WoW Insider reviews Christie Golden's novel, Jaina Proudmoore Tides of War

If it’s beginning to sound like there’s a lot to Tides of War, it’s because there absolutely is. The heat of war rises, a city falls, and in between, inexorably tied to it all is Jaina Proudmoore. She is the focus of the book for a good reason. She is the last one standing that is willing to take a stand for peace. She is a noted diplomat and prides herself on her diplomatic nature — but is that zen for diplomacy really wise in a world that seems hell-bent on war at all costs?

Jaina has to make some major decisions in Tides of War, and they don’t come cost-free. LikeThe ShatteringTides of War features death and grief in a very stark, shocking manner. And like The Shattering, the death in Tides of War is meaningful and with purpose. There is no killing characters for the sake of killing characters; each death bears a significance that pulls the story along. With a name like Tides of War, it’s inevitable that we’ll see some death come into the picture — the names of the deceased however, were a shock.

The only faint sour note that the novel strikes is an attempt at introducing a romance, something that was hinted at by Dave Kosak on Twitter. It wasn’t that the love story wasn’t convincing — in fact, Golden did a much better job handling the tale here than with The Shattering and Aggra’s sudden appearance and relationship with Thrall. There was a gradual nature with this romance; it made sense.

Golden did a fantastic job introducing the situation and building up to the romance without overwhelming the reader. She did a wonderful job of making the relationship an ultimately believable one that worked within the context of what we knew about the characters involved. The problem lies in the fact that with so many other events going on that the romance was overshadowed. It could have been left out entirely, and the story still would have remained intact and none the worse for it. It was nice to see, but it felt unnecessary.

WoW Insider reviews Christie Golden's novel, Jaina Proudmoore Tides of War

Romance entirely aside, Tides of War is at its core a story of transformation, of accepting that all things, be it beliefs, standards, or friendships, will inevitably be tested. Some will change for the better, some will change for the worse, and some will evaporate entirely. It’s a story of uncertainly trying to find a place in a world that seems to have no place for you, be it as a diplomat inexplicably standing for peace in a time of war or a flight of dragons with no purpose.

It’s also the story of an orc gone terribly, terribly wrong, one who has learned precisely all the wrong lessons from his father — and it’s the story of a Horde being torn apart by his decisions. It’s the story of a leader who stood at a crossroads of potential and chose to lead by threats and fear rather than understanding and compassion. It’s the story of a son who in the end, though some glimmers of hope appeared for his character, chose to ignore the light and instead embrace the dark.

And it’s a story of loss, of grief so utterly overwhelming that it threatens to devour the soul. The grief of a leader whose kingdom is wiped out in an instant, the grief of a woman who sees with stark certainty the pointlessness of the path she’s chosen, the grief of a daughter who finally understands the words of her father, entirely too late to do anything about it. It’s a tale of learning to cope with that grief and rise above it, a story of coming to terms with a chaotic world, of learning to adapt like water against the stony face of fate. It’s a beautifully written addition to Golden’s host of Warcraft novels, and I can’t recommend it enough.

Jaina Proudmoore: Tides of War is slated to release Aug. 28. You can preorder the hardcover edition on Amazon for $15.37 or the Kindle edition for $12.99. In addition, there’s anaudiobook version available for $23.95 on Simon & Schuster’s website.

Golden once again demonstrates a remarkable grasp on the characters of the Warcraftuniverse and writes a book that stands right up there with her previous works in quality. As with those works, I fully expect to see Tides on the New York Times Bestseller list as well. Pick this one up, whether you’re a Jaina fan or you’re wanting to see more of the explosive conflict leading into Mists of Pandaria.
