PS4/PS Vita Remote Play: Not Recommended to do Outside Your Home Network, Isn’t 3G Compatible

As we’re just over two weeks away from the PlayStation 4 launch on November 15th in the United States and Canada, Sony has decided to release a Mega PS4 FAQ. Since it can be rather daunting and contains so much information, we’ll be breaking the important information we’ve yet to cover fully into separate posts, hopefully making finding what you need a little easier.

The ability to play PS4 games remotely through the PlayStation Vita is something Sony is very proud of, with almost all PS4 titles supporting the feature.

Done via a Wi-Fi connection (it has been confirmed that it won’t work via 3G), Sony recommends that you do the Remote Play through the same home network your PS4 is connected to. They also recommend that your PS4 be connected to the local area network via an Ethernet cable, that a router suitable for gaming be used, and that the PS Vita system be within close proximity of the Wi-Fi access point so that the connection is free of interference.

Outside of your home network though, Sony doesn’t recommend it because “Remote Play may or may not work over a wide area network.” They further explained:

For Remote Play to function over a wide area network, a robust and stable WiFi connection and broadband Internet connection is required, and the local area network where PS4 is connected must be configured to permit the PS Vita system to access PS4.

Sony continued by explaining how Remote Play on PS4 and PS Vita is improved over PS3 and PS Vita:

Remote Play between PS4 and PS Vita systems leverages Gaikai’s proprietary game streaming technology. PS4 supports this technology on a system level in order to reduce the burden for developers. All activities performed during Remote Play will occur on the PS4 system, such as purchasing add-ons, earning Trophies, and saving game progress.

When using Remote Play, while the PS4 does have to be on, the PS Vita can remotely wake up the PS4 when in standby mode, as long as this feature is activated in the Power Settings menu on PS4.

For further PS4 and PS Vita functionality, you can voice chat or text using the Party application, even during gameplay. You can also browse and compare Trophies, as well as sending and receiving text messages.
