Sony and Viacom Reportedly Agree to Tentative Deal for Sony’s Unnamed Internet TV Service

According to The Wall Street Journal, Sony and major programmer Viacom have tentatively agreed to have Viacom’s cable channels be carried by an unnamed Internet TV service in development by Sony.

If true, Viacom would bring over 20 channels to Sony’s service, some of which include MTV, Comedy Central, and Nickelodeon. Although neither Sony nor Viacom would comment on the deal, Sony has also reportedly been in talks with other programmers such as The Walt Disney Company and Time Warner. The service will recommend TV shows, and Sony’s interface is said to be “highly graphic and easy to use”.

Apparently, Sony plans to bring the service to their TVs and, crucially, PlayStation devices later this year, with phones a future possibility. In fact, the internet TV service is being “led by the part of the company responsible for the PlayStation console”, rather than Sony Pictures.

We’ll be sure to let you know when any official information comes out or if other channels also join Sony’s new service.
